Billy Bragg and Johnny Clegg Added to the 2012 Mariposa Folk Festival Line-up!

The line-up for the 2012 Mariposa Folk Festival got an impressive boost today with the addition of two international artists and musical activists, Billy Bragg and Johnny Clegg. They will share the bill as headliners on the Sunday evening main stage.

The influence of Johnny Clegg transcends his joyful fusion of Western pop and African Zulu rhythms. Musical activism has made him one of South Africa’s most celebrated sons, and an inspiration around the world.

Alternative folk rock musician and left-wing activist, Billy Bragg, is closely associated with leftist political movements. It is only fitting, then, that he was asked to put Woody Guthrie’s unrecorded lyrics to music, in a celebrated collaboration with the band, Wilco.

About today’s announcement, Mariposa Folk Festival Artistic Director, Mike Hill, said, “These performers are globally acclaimed for their valuable social and artistic contributions. They honour the tradition of folk music as a positive force for change, and we are very pleased to present both of them on our Sunday evening stage”.

Track Of The Day:
Bon Iver - "Coming Down" Live

Today's Track Of The Day is a memorable cover of Anais Mitchell's "Coming Down" performed by Bon Iver live on Australia's triple j.

I was forwarded this the other day and I can't get it out of my head, the song in it's original form was beautiful and haunting but Justin Vernon added that little something that he does and takes it to another place.......Enjoy

Track Of The Day:
Bidiniband - Big Men Go Fast On The Water

Today's Track Of The Day is  "Big Men Go Fast On The Water " by Bidiniband. This is a live recording from the Dakota Tavern in Toronto that was filmed for Exclaim! TV.

In my opinion (you can take that for what it is) Dave Bidini can do no wrong, and here with the rest of his band of cohorts he proves me right.......enjoy

The Flaming Lips Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots? Is Making it's theatrical debut this winter

So it looks like The Flaming Lips 2002 album Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots? is finally making it's theatrical debut later this year according to reports from the LA times.

It will be directed by Des McAnuff, who has previously worked on Broadway productions of Jesus Christ Superstar and Jersey Boys. As far as the plot is concerned “Yoshimi will tell the story of a young Japanese artist who journeys into a robot world where she must contend with a host of evil forces,” says the report.

I for one would take this over anything that has Green Day's name tied to it.

Yo La Tengo LIVE at The Images Festival 25th anniversary Closing Night Gala in Toronto

TORONTO - The Images Festival is pleased make the first official announcement about this year's 25th anniversary festival by announcing their Closing Night Gala. The evening features the Canadian premiere screening of The Sounds of Science alongside an original soundtrack composed and performed live by Yo La Tengo. These classic vintage science films will be presented in gorgeous 35mm archival prints. Tickets are $25 advance ($30 door) and are available now online at the Images Festival online store. Additional tickets will be available as of Wednesday at Rotate This and Soundscapes.

The Images Festival's 25th anniversary edition festival begins on April 12, 2012 in downtown Toronto. The Closing Night Gala will be held at Toronto Undergound Cinema (186 Spadina Avenue) on Saturday, April 21, 2012. Full festival programming will be unveiled March 22 at a press conference event.

A day in the life of the sea urchin. Jellyfish and seahorses giving birth. The love life of the octopus. These are the scenarios we encounter in the films of Jean Painlevé (1902-89), the legendary French avant-garde filmmaker who - long before Jacques Cousteau - became obsessed with life under the sea. Famously declaring "science is fiction," Painlevé courted controversy in the 1920s and '30s by unabashedly anthropomorphizing his aquatic subjects in his scientific-poetic cinema.

In 2001, the San Francisco Film Festival presented a series of Painlevé's classic films, with a live score commissioned by American indie-pop icons, Yo La Tengo. An instrumental departure from the trio's usual sound, The Sounds of Science explores ambient post-rock territory reminiscent of Tortoise and the Chicago scene - with occasional forays into funked-up free-jazz - that beautifully transport the viewer and listener into the alien world beneath the waves.

Opening the evening will be a performance by Toronto-based soul-pop singer/songwriter and film curator,  Chris Cummings a.k.a. Mantler, and The tide goes, in the tide goes out by Larissa Fan, a hand-processed black and white ode to the secret world of moon jellyfish (aurelia aurita).

Images Festival Closing Gala (25th anniversary festival)
Saturday April 21, 2012 8 p.m.
Canadian Premiere - The Sounds of Science w/live soundtrack by Yo La Tengo
